Recovery has days that feel like victory and days that feel like hanging on by your fingertips. On those harder days, many people find that God’s Word says what they cannot put into words themselves. Scripture does not erase the struggle, but it does remind you who is walking with you through it.

Here are nine verses to carry with you, along with a few thoughts on why they matter in recovery.

When You Feel Too Weak to Keep Going

Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Recovery asks more of you than willpower can supply. This verse is not a promise that it will be easy. It is a promise about where the strength comes from.

Isaiah 41:10 offers this: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Notice how much of that verse is God doing the work.

When Temptation Feels Overwhelming

1 Corinthians 10:13 promises, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” There is always a way out. Sometimes that way out is a phone call, a meeting, or a counselor’s office.

Matthew 11:28 is one of the gentlest invitations in Scripture: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

When Shame Speaks Louder Than Hope

Shame keeps more people stuck than substances do. Romans 8:1 answers it directly: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 goes further: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Your past is real, but it is not your identity.

Psalm 34:18 meets you in the low place: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

When You Have to Start Over Again

Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Every morning is a fresh supply. Even this one.

James 5:16 points toward community: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Healing happens in the open, with people who love you.
