What Is a Certified Recovery Mentor?
A Certified Recovery Mentor is a peer support professional who uses their own lived experience with substance use recovery to walk alongside others who are earlier in the journey. CRMs are not counselors or clinicians. They are guides who have been there. That is exactly what makes them so effective.
In Oregon, CRMs work in outpatient treatment programs, hospitals, detox centers, county behavioral health departments, and recovery community organizations across the state, from the Portland metro area down through the Willamette Valley and beyond. Wherever people are fighting for their recovery, there is a need for someone who understands the fight firsthand.
CRM Requirements in Oregon
The CRM credential is issued by the Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO). To qualify, you will need a few key things.
Lived experience in recovery. This is the heart of the credential. Applicants must self-identify as a person in recovery from substance use, with a minimum of two years of recovery time. Your story is not a liability here. It is your qualification.
A 40-hour approved training. You must complete a 40-hour peer training program approved by the Oregon Health Authority. The training covers ethics, boundaries, strengths-based support, trauma-informed care, and the practical skills of mentoring someone through early recovery.
A background check. MHACBO conducts a criminal history background check as part of your application. A record does not automatically disqualify you. Many CRMs in Oregon carry a past that includes legal consequences, and the field recognizes that lived experience often includes exactly that.
Ongoing education. Once certified, you will renew every two years with 20 hours of continuing education, including ethics and suicide prevention training. It keeps your skills sharp and your practice safe.
What Does the Career Path Look Like?
Most CRMs in the Portland area and throughout Oregon start in entry-level peer roles at treatment centers or community organizations. From there, the path can grow in several directions. Some mentors move into lead peer or peer supervisor roles. Others stack credentials, adding Peer Support Specialist certification or working toward a CADC to become an addiction counselor. Some discover a passion for a specific community, serving veterans, young adults, or families rebuilding after addiction.
The demand is real. Oregon continues to face one of the most serious addiction crises in the country, and peer-delivered services are a growing part of how the state responds. Agencies across the Portland metro, including here in Milwaukie, are actively hiring people with the CRM credential.
Just as important, the work matters. There is nothing quite like sitting across from someone on their worst day and being living proof that recovery is possible.
What to Expect in the Role
Honest answer: it is beautiful and it is hard. You will celebrate milestones with people who never thought they would see thirty days sober. You will also sit with relapse, grief, and setbacks. Good training, healthy boundaries, and a strong support system are not optional in this work. They are what allow you to serve for the long haul.
